RAIN Approach for Students and Classrooms

Being a responsive and resilient educator really means taking the time to listen to your students. It also means reflecting on your pedagogy as demands in the classroom are changing. It’s not always easy to bridge the gap between instructors’ teaching styles and the needs of today’s secondary- and post-secondary students.

To help facilitate conversations about what your students need and want as part of their learning journeys, we developed the RAIN Approach.

RAIN stands for:

Reach: How will the course/program help students reach their goals?

Awareness: What do students expect to learn from the course/program?

Inclusiveness: How do students learn best? How can instructors make sure students’ learning styles are being addressed?

Necessity: Why are students taking the course/program

Educator Reflexivity Statements

There are times when moving forward in your own teaching means taking the time to do some self reflection. Maybe you feel stuck in your course preparation. Maybe you are teaching courses or subjects that are new to you. Maybe you are returning to teaching after time away. These events – and many others – are good times to reflect on your teaching, how you have come to your understanding of your teaching and students’ learning, and how your own experiences can help you form closer connections to your students. To help you with this process, we have developed a reflexivity statement that you can complete on your own.
